Bucket List 48x60

Sara Nightingale Gallery is pleased to present Both Sides of the Horizon, Anne Raymond and Kim Romero opening Saturday, May 14th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Anne Raymond and Kim Romero are abstract painters whose inspiration derives from the natural world. Unlike most Abstract Expressionists in the 50’s, who insisted on a lack of reference to any person, place or object in their work, Raymond and Romero specifically invoke the sky and sea. Raymond, who grew up flying with her father, has long been inspired by the atmospheric quality of clouds and refracted light, which, when over water, give the sky “a unique drama". Romero’s work is inspired by coastal living, including boating and gardening. Many of her works depict light on the surface of water, hydrangeas, or the multiple nuanced colors of the sea on any given day.

The horizon is the meeting place that brings these two artists together. It is not a distinct, clear line of demarcation for these women, but rather an atmospheric space, where the difference between earth, sea and sky may be ambiguous. Still, as any boater knows, keeping one’s eyes on the horizon is a remedy for motion sickness, a stabilizing force in times of chaos, and a metaphor for looking ahead towards future equilibrium. While both artists cross over the horizon with their subject matter and influences, they each inhabit territories that hover at the edge of the earth.

The exhibition will be on view through June 7th. For more images and information, contact Sara Nightingale at sara@saranightingale.com or 631-793-2256
